The Oratorical Event

The Oratorical Event is the English department’s signature event.

Usually taking place in early April, the event features students from each grade that have worked in secret with department mentors to deliver prepared speeches in person to the school and the broader Bryn Athyn community as well as a live-stream to homes around the world.

The uninvited presence of COVID-19 in the world has forced many changes in our school, one of which was cancelling the Oratorical Event. At least in the traditional sense. While a live delivery is the best delivery, the English department felt it was important to give these parting seniors their chance in the limelight.

In an already unconventional spring, we are grateful that our speakers and emcees were still willing to participate in this most unconventional of Oratorical Events. These students spent countless hours planning, writing, rewriting, recording, and rerecording to make it possible.

While this format is far from ideal for both our speakers and our audience, the English department hopes we can all appreciate the wisdom and wit in these speeches and applaud our students for their willingness to answer the department’s invitation to “Speak Your Mind.”
