ANC is proud to present “Once Upon a Mattress” as the spring musical.
Many moons ago in a far-off place, Queen Aggravain decreed that no couples could marry until her son, Prince Dauntless, found a bride. Princesses came from far and wide to win the hand of the prince, but none could pass the impossible tests given to them by the Queen. That is, until the “shy” swamp princess, Winnifred the Woebegone, showed up. Would she be able to pass the Sensitivity Test, marry her prince and help Lady Larkin and Sir Harry to the altar? Carried on a wave of wonderful songs, by turns hilarious and raucous, romantic and melodic, this rollicking spin on the classic tale The Princess and the Pea provides some side-splitting shenanigans. For after all, a princess is a delicate thing.
Fifty-six students have been cast in this production, with senior Sarah H. ruling the kingdom as Queen Aggravain and sophomore Pax C. as her mute husband. Padraic F. is their son, Prince Dauntless, and senior Maggie S is the new princess, Fred, competing for his hand in marriage. Lady Larken and Sir Harry will be played by Paige S. and Leopold K., both seniors, and senior Anya D. will narrate the show as the Minstrel. Seniors and veteran actors round out the show: Ainsley O. as the Jester and Ian K. as the Queen’s Wizard.

“Once Upon a Mattress” will be supported by two ANC classes: the Costuming class has begun working on designs and the senior StageCraft elective starts after midterm and will be implementing designs created by the junior StageCraft class that was held fall term. Parts of the set design draw inspiration from the cloister at Glencairn museum.
Performances for “Once Upon a Mattress” will be the last two weekends in April.
