Advice for a Freshman Boy from a Sophomore

Advice for a Freshman Boy from a Sophomore

Starting as a freshman at a new high school is a big change and can be intimidating. As a current sophomore, I’d like to shed some light on what freshmen can do to heighten their experience at ANC.

I would highly recommend getting involved in as many extracurriculars as you can. At ANC you can play any sport even if you have no prior experience in it. JV ice hockey, in particular, is really fun. It’s a great way to learn a new skill and have fun with friends while doing it. As a freshman, you can also join the musical, the dance team, and Delta Mu, which are all good ways to get involved. You can become a student ambassador as well. Being a student ambassador means that you will occasionally host a shadow student–someone who is interested in coming to ANC–and you get to take them with you through all your classes. This is a great way to meet new future classmates and become more comfortable talking with strangers.

As a freshman, you should try to form relationships with the sophomores and upperclassmen. If you take part in any extracurriculars, that is a great place to meet kids in classes above you. Simple things like saying hello to them in the hallway or saying goodbye after a sports practice go a long way. Forming relationships with older kids can help you make new friends and can give you a new perspective.

My final piece of advice for freshmen is to remember that the older students have more experience at ANC than you do. Your time as the school leaders will come!

Freshman year at ANC is loads of fun. All of the teachers are great and the classes are interesting, but if you use some of this advice, it can be even better.
