Learning Outside the Classroom

Taking advantage of an educational trend, Angella Irwin (ANC Girls School '01) found herself advancing her learning, while at the same time pursuing her love of the outdoors. Currently attending Arcadia University, she was recently featured in that school's Bulletin as she took part in a bird census at the Schulkyll Center. In the article, Angella notes that she is discovering an interest shared by her father, but her enjoyment of the outdoors isn't new. Graduating from ANC too soon to enjoy the ANC Educational Farm Garden as a student, she nonetheless took part in its creation as part of the Bryn Athyn Cathedral gardening crew that installed and helps maintains the Farm Garden.

Givens Joins Rare Club

As the lone senior on the Dragons’ starting roster, Samme became just the third player in the history of Drexel basketball to score 1,000 points in a career while also pulling down 1,000 boards. He did it in Drexel's final regular season home game victory Wednesday night. Drexel's leading scorer, 6-4 sophomore point guard, Frantz Massenat says, "I think Sam is the best 6-5 post player in the country. I watch a lot of basketball, and you just don't see people his size doing what he does. For him to be as dominant an inside player as he is, that's just shocking."

ANC Alum Discovering New Species

Trond Larsen (class of ‘94) is the director of the Conservation International Rapid Assessment Program. For three weeks in 2010, he was part of a team surveying a region in southwestern Suriname. During their expedition, the team discovered dozens of new species, including fish, a frog, katydids, damselflies, water beetles and scarab beetles.

In a recent interview with Fox News, Trond describes the expedition and a variety of amazing and previously unknown creatures, such as the Bullet Ant, whose apt name he experienced first hand, and his favorite: an unusual horned female Dung Beetle.

Students enjoy the MLK Day of Service

A group of 45 ANC students and faculty joined 85,000 Philadelphians in Monday’s Martin Luther King Day of Service. 4 groups used their “day on” to help organizations like A Woman’s Place in Doylestown, Habitat for Humanity and the Mid-Town Parish Youth Center in downtown Philly, and the Kuhl Skate at Junge Pavilion.
The Habitat event kicked off with a representative from each group reciting an MLK quote and sharing a bit about its meaning. Senior Will O’Connor spoke for ANC. Their volunteer coordinator wrote me today, as he’s interested in doing more with ANC. He wrote “I just wanted to touch base to express our gratitude for the help of so many enthusiastic Academy students and teachers on Monday."
