ANC Spanish Exchange

ANC participated in the fourth “intercambio” with La Purísima school in Valencia, Spain this past month. To kick off the exchange, ANC students traveled to Spain during spring break (March 1-11) to stay with their host family and attend school for two days. Twice the Spanish hosts took ANC students on excursions: once to the Roman ruins in Sagunto and later on a walking tour of historic Valencia. ANC students also went with a guide to the “Ciudad de las artes y ciencias”--a science and art center including the largest aquarium in Europe. After a fun-filled week with with their hosts, the ANC group traveled to Barcelona to spend the weekend visiting historic sights there, including La Sagrada Familia, Parque Güell and Las Ramblas, ending the weekend with a flamenco dinner show.

March 22-April 1 the Spanish students were reunited with their ANC hosts, attending classes on Tuesday and Thursday. They noticed differences in our two educational systems such as our students changing classrooms for each class whereas in Spain the students stay in one classroom and change teachers! On Monday they explored historic Philadelphia with their American hosts, and Wednesday the Spanish students had their own excursion into the city, including a visit of the Franklin Institute. A highlight of their time here was the Jr/Sr dance held at Cairnwood Mansion. Spanish high schools to not host dances so it was an unforgettable experience for them!

Many tears were shed as the Spanish students boarded the bus Monday morning to head to NYC for two days of sightseeing before flying back to Spain. They thoroughly enjoyed their time at ANC and hope to return soon!

Performing Arts Comes Full Circle

Mr. Baird Kistner is reprising his role as Director, and is joined by ANC alumnus Luke David (Boys School '13) as the Assistant Director. Mr. Kistner directed Luke as Mike Tevee in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in 2011.

ANC travels to Wonderland this winter in the second half of the flip-flopped theatrical year in which the musical is performed in the fall and the play in the spring. With only an 8-week rehearsal process, this show will be produced just as quickly as the action in the script.

LWW Wraps Up

“The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” delighted audiences with four performances over the weekend of November 30 to December 2. All were enchanted by the magical story, with unconventional scene changes done by dancing Wood Nymphs wearing fairy lights.

The skilled technical team produced a living, breathing world with ever-changing light trees, perfect for the dramatic battle scenes. Cast members and the makeup crew enjoyed creating animal faces as well as the fantastical Wood Nymphs and Evil Followers of the White Witch.

New Food Service at ANC

After an extensive search process, The ANC Secondary Schools and Bryn Athyn College have changed food service vendors effective July 1, 2017 to SAGE Dining Services. The decision was made after reviewing proposals from a variety of food service providers. SAGE Dining Services was selected based on the terms they offered in quality of service, support of community, nutrition, education, sustainability, and delicious food using seasonal, locally-sourced ingredients.

SAGE roasts all of their own deli meats. Food items on the menu will be freshly prepared and sourced from local vendors. SAGE buys cage-free, Certified Humane® eggs and antibiotic- and hormone-free milk. They only use trans-fat-free oils and MSG-free seasonings; there are no artificial flavors or preservatives on the menu. SAGE also has a unique program to address the needs of students who have food allergies or restrictions. For more details about what SAGE has to offer, please visit www.sagedining.com. Look for the new ANC Secondary School menu to be posted in August.
