Fall 2011 Awards
The 2011 ANC field hockey team had a very memorable year.  The season started off very strong with 4 wins in a row, all of which were shut outs by our fearless goalie, Michelle Bedford.  The rest of the season had its ups and downs, but the girls supported each other and formed a closer bond than ever before.  They practiced hard and stayed focus on the task at hand and began to see their hard work and dedication pay off.  The most memorable game was against Westtown.  The teams were evenly matched, but ANC fought hard and came out with a 3-2 win in over-time.  Our only senior was co-captain Brettie Pitcairn, who didn't play last year but fortunately decided to return this season.  She had a huge impact on the team, both in terms of talent, as well as leadership.  The other two co-captains were Emily McQueen and Nicole King who did a phenomenal job in supporting and motivating the team on and off the field.  The captains were also our 3 midfielders who controlled the pace of every game.  Our steady defenders, Britte Genzlinger, Jency Boyce, and Myrta Asplundh did a great job clearing balls out of the circle and preventing countless shots on goal.  Our mighty forwards, Raika Nunez, Cheyanne Asplundh, Sam Elsing, and Heather Schauder put a lot of pressure on our opponents’ goalies and scored numerous goals throughout the season.  Gage Blair and Maddy Rose were our most versatile players.  Although they practiced and played as defenders for the past two years, we asked them to play defense, midfield, and forward this year and they were always up to the challenge.  Even though Ashley Smith and Erica Smith did not get a lot of playing time, they continued to practice hard every day. Their cheerfulness was very contagious and we really appreciated their positive presence. The team's overall record was 9-5-1 and 4-3 in the Friend's League earning us 5th place this year. This was a spectacular season and we look forward to next year!

Scores and Recaps

10/18/11 ANC 3 v. Westtown 2 (OT)
ANC hosted another tough league game against Westtown on Tuesday afternoon. This game was very intense and exciting to watch. It had you on the edge of your seat, biting your nails, on your tippy toes, and you could probably have felt and heard everyone's heart beat from the extreme excitement. ANC maintained possession of the ball for a good portion of the game by making excellent passes to each other. But WT had a few fast breaks and were able to get multiple penalty corners and scored the first goal of the game. ANC came back even stronger and Raika put the team on the scoreboard to tie the game 1-1. Sophomore Forward, Cheyanne Asplundh pushed the ball across the cage where sophomore Sam Elsing was waiting and hit the ball in to give ANC the lead. Unfortunately WT scored again off another fast break which forced the game to go into overtime. With only 7 players out on the field, 15 minute sudden victory, the ball went back and forth between ANC and WT. Junior midfielder, Nicole King passed the ball to Junior midfielder Emily McQueen who slammed the ball into the back of the cage to give the team a very well deserved win. ANC Defense, Jency Boyce, Britte Genzlinger, and Myrta Asplundh had an incredible game and worked hard to consistently to clear the ball out of the circle. ANC goalie, Michelle Bedford once again played like a super star! She saved many shots on goal by WT and sparked the team to play even harder! GREAT GAME LADIES!!! This game will never be forgotten!

10/17/11 ANC 0 @ Moorestown Friends 1
ANC traveled to Moorestown New Jersey on a sunny afternoon to play another important league game. Even though the girls were feeling a lot of sadness, they went out onto the field and played with their hearts. ANC hustled and dominated most of the game but unfortunately was not able to score. Even after Moorestown scored a goal, ANC continued to play as a team and supported each other on the field. We, the coaches are so proud of them. It took so much strength and courage to forget about everything and to just focus on playing field hockey. They are an incredible group of young ladies with so much heart and love for each other. Great job ladies. Also, the Field Hockey Team has set up a small memorial on the bleachers for Mauro de'Padua, so please feel free to come by and write something if you wish.

10/11/11 ANC 5 @ Friends Select School 0
was very excited to travel to Friend Select to play on their turf field on the roof. The game started off at a very fast pace and ANC dominated the game advancing the ball into the opponents circle. After many shots towards goal and multiple corners, Emily McQueen hit a ball across the goal and Raika Nunez tipped the ball into the back of the cage to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. After that, ANC continued to control the game by passing, dribbling and playing like a solid team. Raika Nunez and Sam Elsing had 2 goals each and Nicole King had 1 goal. Emily McQueen and Cheyanne Asplundh had one assist each. Michelle Bedford had 5 saves in this game. ANC is currently 8-1 overall and 2-1 in the League. Come cheer the team on in their next home game vs. Hun School this Thursday, 10/13/11.

10/6/11 ANC 7 v. Solebury 0
For Charter Day weekend we had a beautiful evening with the lights shining bright on the ANC field. The girls were pumped, excited and ready to play. They came out with a lot of intensity and a hunger to score. Only 3 minutes into the game, Raika Nunez slammed the ball into the back of the cage. ANC did a fantastic job of switching the ball from one side of the field to the other side creating space and opportunities to shoot on goal. Raika Nunez and Cheyanne Asplundh had 2 goals each and Emily McQueen, Nicole King, and Heather Schauder added 1 goal each to make the final score 7-0. The ANC Field Hockey Team would like to thank all our fans that came out that evening to watch and cheer on the team.

10/4/11 ANC 4 v. George School 2
Finally on a sunny and dry day, ANC travelled to George School to play their second league game of the season. George School set the pace of the game early in the first half by scoring first, but ANC came right back with a goal of their own. After that goal, ANC continued to dominate the game and scored 2 more. Sam Elsing had 4 goals in this game, making the final score 4-2! ANC will be hosting Solebury this Thursday under the lights at 7pm! Come cheer and support the team! Let's Go Lions!

9/30/11 ANC 8 v. Perkiomen 0

9/29/11 ANC 2 v. Pottsgrove 1

9/27/11 ANC 0 v. Germantown Friends School 2
ANC had their first league game today against GFS and unfortunately had their first loss of the season. ANC had possession of the ball for most of the game and had many opportunities to score but GFS defense was very strong and their goalie blocked every shot. Michelle Bedford had 4 saves in this game.

9/20/11 ANC 0 v. Princeton Day School 0
Luckily the rain held off today so we were able to play our game against Princeton Day School. Going into the game we knew that they were going to be a tough opponent, but ANC stepped up to the challenge and dominated from the very first whistle. ANC passed, dribbled and carried the ball up the field and had many penalty corners. Unfortunately ANC was not able to put one in the back of the cage, but they never gave up trying. With only about 5 minutes left in the game, ANC was awarded a penalty stroke. Cheyanne Asplundh placed a beautiful shot to the top left corner, but unfortunately Princeton Day goalie dove and tipped the ball away leaving the final score to be 0-0. For ANC goalie, Michelle Bedford, this game is her 5th shutout! ANC has their first league game this Friday against Friends Central! Come cheer them on!

9/16/11 ANC 6 v. Archbishop Ryan Home 0

9/9/11 ANC 5 @ Pennington School 0
ANC traveled to New Jersey to play against Pennington on their turf field. ANC started off a little slow while Pennington came out strong. But as the game progressed, ANC was able to start connecting down the field and quickly scored back to back goals. Sam E and Cheyanne A each put in 2 goals, and midfielder Emily M contributed one goal to make the final score 5-0! Brettie P played an excellent game stopping their attack and had 2 assists in the game. Goalie Michelle B had her third shutout of the season and saved a goal on a penalty stroke.
