From the Coaches

Fall 2011 Awards
“It’s not the will to win, but the will to prepare to win that makes all the difference.” – Bear Bryant.

While this year’s squads did not rack up the victories, they never quit on preparing to win.  And so it was a very successful fall.  I’m not trying to simply “paint a bright picture.”  This year’s team reminded me of why I love coaching.  They had some of the worst luck of any squad I’ve coached – we lost a game on an own goal, one on a penalty kick, and one on a fluke bounce.  One of our captains broke his foot.  One new recruit got hurt in the preseason and never played until our last game... the list goes on.  And then, in the waning weeks of the season, tragedy struck our school and took an emotional toll on everyone.  This was a season that could have gone sour.  But instead, these young men met every day with determination and diligence.  They consistently chose to do the right thing, even when they were spent, and invested themselves in that choice.  It paid off in the end of the season, when the team finished with perhaps their two best games, but it will also continue to pay off going forward.  These are the lessons that will serve them.  This is what athletics can teach.

So thank you to the seniors, who set a great example.  And thanks to the underclassmen, who seem ready to keep it rolling.  Well done.

2011 Opening Remarks
After a terrific finish to last year's season, this year's varsity is back with some high energy and aspirations. Our goal will be to play more consistently against our league opponents and grab a playoff spot. We should be solid in the back this year, with some experienced and tough defenders. We have players with the potential to attack if we can organize in midfield to support it. We are going to need to create some chemistry to accomplish this. Fortunately, this should be an immensely coachable group, and so I am looking forward to working this this squad. As usual, we also have a large group of supporting players on the JV squad. Our goal will be to help them learn the game and develop as the season continues. Whether a new student is a rookie or an experienced player, we have a spot for them.

Scores and Recaps

10/28/11 Varsity ANC 1 vs. Hun School 2
Despite the scoreline, ANC wrapped up the season with perhaps one of their finest games this fall. Visitors Hun School is a perennially strong opponent and the Lions were prepared. They came out strong, with organized passing and an aggressive attack. The Lions got on the board first when Geoff Brisco hit a rocket from 25 yards, which ricocheted off the bar and over the goalie’s fingertips. Despite missing defensive stalwart Colton Doering, ANC played tough in the back. Senior Brett Doering adapted well to cover for his brother, Tyler Hill played turned in an exceptionally strong effort, and Evan Kloc made some key saves to keep things close. There were some frustrating moments too, when the Lions couldn’t capitalize on opportunities. But the opportunities were well-earned and telling of the effort and hard work this squad has put in during this season. Well done.

10/27/11 JVB ANC 3 @ Westtown 3
In a wild season finale, the Lions traveled to Westtown on Thursday and came seconds away from pulling out a victory. Alex Langlotz scored twice and Jake Horigan netted one to knot things at 3-3. With only seconds left, freshman Willie Loeb went from midfield to the opponent’s 18 and appeared to net the gamewinner, only to find out he had been beaten by the buzzer. It was an exciting match and a good finish for the junior squad.

10/21/11 V ANC 1 v. Lower Moreland 0
At the end of a long, trying week, ANC rose to the occasion Friday for a win against backyard rival Lower Moreland. Both Lion squads had met in a scrimmage early on during sports camp in a close contest, so it was time to see what a season of hard work would produce. Christian Buss returned from injury and added to the energy level, and the hosts jumped out early, stringing together some of the best passing of the season. In only the 6th minute, striker Geoff Brisco sent a ball across the net to partner Luke Frazier, who neatly placed it far post. The run of play ebbed back and forth, with each team gaining momentum, but ANC created more chances in the end, and Evan Kloc came up with some big saves to earn the shutout. Thanks to the big crowd who came out to support this victory. The Lions will host one more game against Hun School to end the season. Hope to see you on the sidelines.

10/21/11 JV ANC 1 v. LM 0
The JV closed out their season by also earning a victory on Friday afternoon. Dustin Smith earned the shutout in goal, including a stopped penalty kick, while fellow Kempton native Seth Wyncoll scored the winning goal. Congratulations JV!

10/18/11 V ANC 1 v. Germantown Friends 3
The Lions struck first in the 15th minute. Brett Doering flicked on a long throw in from classmate Luke Frazier. Alex Bock was exactly where he belonged to finish. Unfortunately, the Tigers built some momentum and answered twice before half, and then iced it with another in the second. More than anything, I want to commend this team for taking the field during a tremendously trying time, and playing hard until the whistle. They exhibited great character and spirit.

10/18/11 JV ANC 0 v. GFS 1

10/14/11 V ANC 0 v. Moorestown Friends 2
The Lions hosted Moorestown Friends in their last Friday afternoon game, hoping to capture that elusive league win. ANC came out hard and put together some of the best passing of the season, possessing the ball through midfield and creating some exciting moments. As has been the case however, the Lions couldn't get a break when they needed it. Freshman Brennan McCurdy put one shot off the crossbar in the second half, and keeper Evan Kloc made a show-stopping save, only to have the ball end up at the feet of an opponent, who finished for the second goal. The attitude and class with which these boys play is a privilege to witness. They still have 3 home games ahead of them. Hope to see you on the sidelines.

10/14/11 JV ANC 0 v. MFS 2

10/12/11 V ANC 0 @ Princeton Day School 4

10/12/11 JV ANC 0 @ Princeton Day School 2

10/11/11 V ANC 0 v. Friends Central 2
The Lions hosted Friends Central, who currently sit at the top of the league standings, on Tuesday. The Lions' bench has been wearing a little thin of late, due to illness and injury, but ANC came out hard like any other game this season. The stellar defensive effort we've come to expect was on display, and Evan Kloc came up with one of his best saves of the season when he came out to stone one of the Phoenix on a breakaway. What was also noteworthy were the opportunities this squad created in this match. They played smart, possessed when they could, and actually outshot the visitors over the course of the game. Every game indicates that this team is headed toward a league win soon.

10/11/11 JV ANC 0 v. FCS 1

10/7/11 V ANC 0 v. DelCo Christian 1
The Lions hosted Delco Christian in their first-ever meeting for Charter Day on Friday. ANC rode the energy of a large home crowd and mounted a stalwart defense throughout the game against a strong opponent. The Hill and Doering brothers worked exceptionally hard, backed by some solid goalkeeping by Evan Kloc, to hold the visitors scoreless, while ANC's attack created a few opportunistic counters of their own. Neither side was able to convert through much of the game however, and it looked as though the game would end deadlocked until an unlucky bounce ended things in the final minute. The spirit of this squad remains undaunted however, and we are already look forward to three contests next week. Come out and support the team against Moorestown Friends on Friday!

10/4/11 Varsity ANC 0 @ George School 4
The Lions visited rivals George School on Tuesday to restart league play.  George School fielded a very skilled team and had the run of play.  The Lions were playing without captain Christian Buss, who was recently diagnosed with a foot fracture, but played hard and worked to string together a few threats.  The defense had their work cut out for them and had to be aggressive to many balls.  Evan Kloc recorded a season-high 15 saves.

10/4/11 JV ANC 0 @ George School 4

9/30/11 Varsity ANC 1 v. Perkiomen School 0

The Lions captured that elusive first win with an exciting home victory over Perkiomen on Friday. After a week of illness and injury, the varsity squad came out hard. Passing was a key point in practice this week, and ANC strung together some nice play to repeatedly create opportunities. In ironic fashion however, the deciding goal came on a purely opportunistic moment. Brandon Hill sent a ball in toward net from about 40 yards, where a misjudgment by the keeper left Luke Frazier with an easy header for the winning goal. Willie Loeb made 3 saves to record his first career shutout.

9/30/11 JV ANC 2 @ Perkiomen School 0
A smaller than usual Lions squad traveled to Pennsburg on Friday and came away with a convincing win. Captain Kenan Smith celebrated his birthday with his first goal of the season, and Liam Taylor added one to open his career scoring. Dustin Smith recorded his first shutout on the season.

9/27/11 Varsity ANC 2 v. Abington Friends  3 (OT)
Oh, what a heartbreaker. The Lions came out with every intention of setting a winning tone in their home opener against the Abington Friends Kangaroos on Tuesday. In many ways, they did just that. The Lions strung together some organized play early on and Brett Doering netted his first varsity goal to put the Lions up 1-0 at half. The visitors answered with two of their own in the second period, almost closing the door on ANC's hopes. There was some exciting play, a few "doorstep" moments, and many players giving it their all. Finally, with only a few minutes left, captain Christian Buss tied things up when he converted a free kick from 25 yards. This forced overtime and, in a game which could have gone either way, fate was unfortunately decided by a call on the field. The visitors were awarded a penalty kick in the second overtime period, which proved to be enough for the win. The Lions will continue their quest for a "W" this Friday at home against Perkiomen.

9/27/11 JV ANC 2 v. Abington Friends 2
Alex Langlotz netted his 5th goal in as many games, while Seth Wyncoll added another, in the Lions' home opener against Abington Friends.

9/23/11 Varsity ANC 0 @ Shipley 6
The Lions traveled again Friday, this time to perennial league powerhouse Shipley School. The hosts moved the ball well on the slick turf field and put points up early before the Lions could get their feet under them. Play improved throughout the second half, and our defense made some key plays to keep fend off an organized attack. The Lions are eager to open their home campaign on Tuesday against league opponent Abington Friends.

9/23/11 JV ANC 0 @ Shipley 4
The junior Lions played a more even game than the score line would reflect, creating some opportunities and playing even through much of the game. Unfortunately they could not convert.

9/21/11 Varsity ANC 0 @ Westtown 0
The Lions earned their first point in the league with a scoreless tie on Wednesday. ANC came ready to play hard, and set the tone early when Alex Bock tested the goalkeeper from 30 yards, forcing a fingertip save. The hosts mounted several organized attacking efforts and kept the Lions defense on their toes, but Alex, Brandon Hill, and Colton and Brett Doering were up to the task, and Evan Kloc scooped up every ball that made its way into the 18. There were several exciting moments as ANC fought their way through 2 overtime periods, but nobody could find the back of the net, and the score remained knotted after 100 minutes of play. The Lions travel to Shipley on Friday, they finally open their home campaign on Tuesday, 9/27.

9/21/11 JV ANC 0 @ Westtown 2
The junior Lions were held to almost no shots at Westtown, who fielded and organized, possession-oriented squad. ANC will look to improve their league record at Shipley on Friday.

9/16/11 Varsity ANC 1 @ Friends Select  2
The Lions continued their road stretch with a visit to Fairmount Park to open league play against Friends Select. The host Falcons sent a message with a tally in the first minute. ANC keeper seemed to have the shot covered when it took a bad hop and found its way in. Senior Blake Johnson equalized on a feed from Jay Eiben, to tie it up before half time. ANC applied most of the pressure throughout, with a stalwart defense managing any of Select's forays forward. Unfortunately, bad luck struck again in the 71st minute, when a cross was accidentally deflected by ANC into their own net. This team played the game they wanted to play, but unfortunately the scorebook tells a different story. Two more league games on the road next week before ANC opens their home season on Tuesday, 9/27.

9/16/11 JV  ANC 6 @ Friends Select 0
Alex Langlotz tallied for a hat trick, including one while playing defense, Sean Tate added one, and Seth Wyncoll and Jake Horigan each opened their ANC scoring with a goal each. Junior Dustin Smith earned the shutout in net for the Lions.

9/15/11 JV ANC 1 @ Solebury School 3
After a couple solid weeks of practice, the junior Lions opened their season by traveling to Solebury School on Thursday. After previous game cancellations and postponements, this squad was eager to get on the field and compete. Their hosts fielded an athletic squad, but ANC answered well, executing what they've learned early in the season and creating opportunities. Alex Langlotz scored for the Lions, but Solebury answered with a couple opportune goals to earn the win. Dustin Smith played goalkeeper for the entire match. The Lions will turn around to open league play at Friends Select the next day.

9/13/11 Varsity ANC 0 @ Chestnut Hill Academy 5
After a week of disappointing cancellations and postponements, the Lions traveled to Chestnut Hill to open the 2011 season. The hosts proved to be possibly the strongest opponent on this year's schedule, dominating play and handing the Lions their first loss. It is important to watch how a team handles a tough one early in the season, and my hunch is that this group is only going to use it to get better. Despite the score line, Brett D, Colton D, Alex B, Brandon H, and Zack O managed a tough defensive effort. There were also some bright moments in the attack. Look for a better outcome this Friday, when ANC opens its Friends League campaign in Fairmount Park against hosts Friends Select.
