From the Coaches

With Thanksgiving approaching and the temperature dropping, the anticipation of ice at the Pavilion is mounting immensely! The boys are extremely excited about getting on the ice and having another fun and successful season. Last season the Lions made it to the championship game finishing in 2nd place in the IHL. The Lions are hoping to make it back to the playoffs where anything is possible. In order to have a winning season the returning players will have to fill the void of last year’s graduates and the new players will have to quickly adapt to ANC hockey. This year’s team will be the largest in recent memory with a handful of the players giving ice hockey a try for the very first time.

The varsity squad will be led by Seniors Travis McCurdy and Cade Gurney. Other strong returning players are Colton Doering, Brett Doering, Geoff Brisco, Steve Pronesti, Ben Adams and Luke Frazier. There are several other returning players and several new players that will fill out the roster very nicely.

The junior varsity squad will have plenty of depth to work with and are anticipating several games to end up in the win column. There will be more JV games than usual due to the large number of players.

So put on something warm and come out to the rink to support the ANC Ice Hockey teams.

2/14/2012 JV ANC 2 v. Princeton Day School 6
ANC JV played there final game of the season tonight Tues 2/14 against PDS at the Pavilion. For our group of JV opponents this was like a playoff game for us. Sadly the ANC JV did not come out strongly enough to start the game and play the way they needed to. We gave up 3 early goals in the first period, creating turnovers and not challenging PDS. Although we were getting some shots on goal, ANC JV was struggling until Seth W got a goal late in the period assisted by Clay C and Jessie F. A few minutes later we got another goal from Kirk S assisted by Jared S and Cody S. ANC gave up another goal and trailed after one period 4 to 2. ANC gave up goals in the second period and third periods to lose the game 6 - 2. PDS took many penalties in the second period, but ANC could not capitalize. Dustin S started the game and gave up five goals, but should be proud of his effort as the Team did not give the support he deserved. Colin R came in and finished the game, playing well also. Luke S started the game up front, but dropped back to defense to help out and played well through the game. The boys had a good season, competing in many games throughout and improving and having fun along the way. We look forward to playing the school teachers on Mon 2/20 to wrap up the season.

2/7/2012 JV ANC 5 @ Valley Forge Military Academy 0
ANC JV played VFMA on Tues 2/7 PM at Ice Line in West Chester. As a famous coach would say, "This is a winnable game ". So the ANC JV went to work and got goals from Brennan Mc assisted by Luke S and Josh G and a second marker from Cody S assisted by Cameron W for a 2 - 0 lead after one period. In the second period ANC JV managed three more goals - the first from Sam N assisted by Brennan Mc and Luke S, next from Seth W assisted by Cameron W and Jessie F, and a final goal from Brennan Mc assisted by Luke S and Sam N. Final score 5 - 0 ANC over VFMA. Mr. Dustin S was outstanding in net, stopping all 22 shots he faced. So as far as I can tell, that is the most goals scored in a game and first shutout in a long time for ANC JV. Missing Clay C and Ken McQ, we got help from Justin B and Joe S. So in review, Brennan Mc ( 2 goals and 1 assist ) - Luke S ( 3 assists) , Cameron W ( 2 assists ) , Sam N ( 1 goal and 1 assist) . The boys are really putting things together as we close out the season, with have another game this week on Thurs against Bucks County Thunder at BCIS. They beat us last time 2 -1 in a great game. So come out and watch us go after another one.

2/6/2012 Varsity ANC 4 v. Upper Dublin 5
The boys accepted their first loss of the season on Monday night by Upper Dublin. Upper Dublin came out on top 5 to 4. The Lions looked flat and a little bit off while Upper Dublin played their best game of year. The Lions did however manage to outshoot Upper Dublin 33 to 24. The crazy eight line did all of the scoring for the Lions. Travis M. had 1 goal and 3 assists, Justin C. had 1 goal and two assists and Cade G. had two goals. Surprisingly enough the Lions were able to stay out of the box for the entire game. Steve P. saw considerable time on defense after recovering from an early season foot injury.

2/4/2012 JV ANC 5 v. BAYH 3
ANC JV played the BAYH Bantams again this evening at the Pavilion Rink on Sat 2/4/12. In a follow up to the game played earlier this season, it was another closely played game. BAYH got a goal early in the first period to which the JV responded. Brennan Mc scored on nice shot from a great pass from Rich S to tie the game. Later in the second period BAYH scored to take a 2 - 1 Lead after the first period. In the second period ANC JV got goals from Seth W (unassisted) and another from Clay C assisted by Seth C and Jessie F to which BAYH tied it up to end the second period 3 - 3. In the final period ANC JV got a goal from Seth W assisted by Jessie F and another goal from Brennan Mc from Ken Mc for a final score of 5 - 3. A win is good and a well-played game is better. The boys had a great time and as we close out the season we are getting Bae K, Justin B, and Joe S in to games and they love it. Dustin S was great in goal, Scott W and Rich S did well on defense, and Sam N, Derek W, and Cody S all played well. We have 2 away games next week, so let's play some hockey.

2/3/2012 Varsity ANC 2 @ Hun 2
The Academy Of The New Church Boys Ice Hockey team tied Hun School 2 to 2 in an Independent Hockey League game on Friday afternoon in front of a large ANC crowd at Ice Land. It was very intense game with play going end to end and both teams having several good scoring chances throughout the game. The tie was all that ANC needed to secure 1st place for the regular season. The Lions will be seeded #1 and will play the winner of seed #4 vs. #5 on Wednesday February 15 at the Pavilion. The key to the game was the crowd. The ANC fans were awesome which gave the boys the extra boost they needed to get the job done! So leave February 15 open to come support the boys and be part of the playoff experience. The team really needs your help! The game time is yet to be announced but it will most likely be at 4:30.

1/31/2012 Varsity ANC 6 v. Episcopal 3
The ANC Ice Hockey team defeated the Churchman from the Episcopal Academy 6 to 3 in a league game during a warm and sunny afternoon on Tuesday. The win locks the Lions into at least 2nd place in the IHL with the chance to take over 1st place with a win over Hun School on Friday at 5:00. The game was a complete battle as Episcopal gave it everything that they had right up to the final buzzer. The Lions defense made up of Colton D, Mack, E, Geoff, B, Ben A, and David A., played an outstanding game fending off the Churchman attack time after time again. It was nice to see Steve P. get his first varsity ice time of the season after recovering from a foot injury. The offense had their work cut for themselves as the Churchman goalie Ben G. played an outstanding game. The Lions outshot the Churchman 40 to 27. The Lions scoring leader was Freshman Shane M. with 2 goals and 2 assists (one empty netter). Co-Captain Cade G. had a play maker with 3 assists. Freshman Justin C. had 2 goals and 1 assist and Co- Captain Travis M. had 2 goals. The Lions goalie Addison E. proved how strong he can play by keeping the puck from sliding past him on a hand full of low slot close range shots. Alex H. and Luke F. once again played a gritty game forcing the Churchman to skate with their heads up.

Point of Pride:
The ANC Boys Ice Hockey team is 18-0-2 overall and 8-0-1 in league play. Great job Boys!

1/28/2012 JV ANC 1 @ Bucks County Thunder 2
ANC JV played the Bucks County Thunder at BCIS on Sat 1/28 PM. Another good game was played by the ANC JV Team against a very good opponent. After an evenly played first period the score was 1 - 0. In the second period we came back to tie the score on a goal by Seth W assisted by Clay C. late in the second period. Colin R was playing very well throughout the game, facing many shots and a couple breakaways. We gave up another goal later in the period and continued to play well to finish the game, losing 2 -1. Cody S played a particularly strong game as did Jessie F, Brennan Mc, Ken Mc, Jared S, Rich S, Scott W, Josh G, and Steve P. All in all, the team is more consistently playing strong hockey and looks forward to three more games next week all at home. Go ANC JV. Coach Scott

1/27/2012 Varsity ANC 6 v. Haverford 5
The ANC Boys Varsity Ice Hockey team defeated Haverford 6-5 in a Independence Hockey League game in front of a huge crowd on Friday afternoon at the Pavilion. The win keeps ANC in 2nd place and Haverford in 3rd place with only 1 week left in the regular season. The game did not go as originally planned with ANC going to the penalty box way to many times. The Lions were able to keep their focus however and continue to work hard. The first period ended 0-0 and the second period ended 4-2 for ANC. The scoring for ANC was distributed amongst five different players. Justin C. had the first one on a power play from Travis M. Shane M. had his first shorthanded goal of the season from Mack E. Travis had the third goal even strength from Cade. G. and Justin. Cade G. had the fourth goal on a top shelve long wrist shot. Travis had the fifth goal shorthanded. The final goal was a huge one by Luke F. from Colton D. and Travis late in the third period. The next game is against Episcopal at the Pavilion on Tuesday at 4:45.

1/24/2012 Varsity ANC 6 @. Delaware Military Academy 5
On Tuesday January 24 the Lions had a nail biting 6-5 win over the undefeated Sea Hawks from the Delaware Military Academy in Delaware. The Lions came out slow and found themselves down 0-2 within the first two minutes! This was a serious wakeup call as the boys battled back making it 2 to 2 mid way through the 1st period. The Sea Hawks did not let up however increasing the lead again by 2 goals making the score 2-4 early into the 2nd period. This is when the boys put the pedal down and took control of the game. After four unanswered goals the score was 6-4 for ANC. As the game was nearing the end a Sea Hawk was able to slip past the ANC defense for a breakaway goal making it 6-5. In the final minute of play the Lions had to fend off the Sea Hawks as they pulled their goalie for the extra attacker and were able to get a couple of shots off. It made for a very intense and exciting finish. Travis M. was the scoring leader with 4-g 2-a., Cade G. had 1-g 2-a., Shane M had 1-g 1a., Colton D. had 2-a., Geoff B., Justin C., and Luke F. all had 1-a each. The boys still have a lot of hard work ahead of them with several huge league and non-league games coming up.

1/24/2012 JV ANC 1 v. DelCo Christian 6
ANC JV played against Delco Christian JV on Tues 1/24 PM at home. Against a very strong group from Delco, our Boys gave as strong an effort as possible given the number of games they have played lately. ANC managed to tie the score in the first period at 1 to 1 on a goal from Clay C assisted by Kirk S with support from Seth W. Unfortunately, as in previous games penalties against cost us as the game wore on. Eventually, we gave up another first period goal, two more in the second period, and two more in the third period for a final score of 6 - 1. The shots on goal reflected the score and game, as we gave up over 40 shots against and got less than 10 for us for the game. Strong play from Sam N, Ken Mc, and Jared S helped us through the game. The defense was led by Scott W, Rich S, Steve P, Josh G, and Cameron W. Colin R in goal played well and gave it all he had til the end. We have another home game on Thurs against Chestnut Hill JV and Sat against Bucks Co, so hang in and support us. Coach Scott

1/23/2012 JV ANC 3 @ Princeton Day 5
ANC JV played Princeton Day School on Mon 1/23 on the road. Although the boys were clearly tired, they tried to play a strong game. ANC trailed after the first period 2 to 1, on a goal from Seth W assisted by Clay C. early in the period. ANC gave up 2 more goals in the second period to trail 4 to 1. The boys didn't quit. They scored goals from Clay C assisted by Seth W and a goal by Brennen Mc assisted by Sam N and Ken Mc to close the score to 4 to 3 in the third period. However, we gave up a late goal to trail 5 - 3. We pulled the goalie - Dustin S who played strongly all game in the final minute and we thought we had a goal from Brennen Mc who took a shot in the slot but somehow the puck never left his stick and went into the goal ( which defies logic ) - so final score was 5 - 3. So all in all, a good game against a team that was celebrating it's senior players and had a full house of fans. We play Tues PM and Thurs PM this week at home, see you there.

1/21/2012 Varsity ANC 6 @ Hill 2
It was a cold, snowy and icy day as ANC traveled to the Hill on Saturday to take on the Blues in league play. It was a mental challenge for the Lions as calls did not appear to go their way. The Lions went to the box 6 times compared to 2 for the Blues as Hill gave it everything they had to make it a game. Hill's goalie stood on her head as she stopped shot after shot from the Lions. The game was still tight going into the 2nd intermission as ANC held a 3-2 lead. Shortly into the 3rd period the Lions were able to pop in a couple of quick goals to open up the lead and finally win the game 6 to 2. The lions scoring was led by Cade G. with 2 goals and 2 assists. Travis M. had 1 goal and 2 assists. Geoff B. had 1 goal and 1 assist. Mack E. had his first ANC goal and contributed on another with an assist. Shane M. popped in the first goal. Ben A set up a real nice goal with a hard shot from the point that Travis tipped and Cade redirected from low to high going in over the goalies shoulder. Colton D. played some very needed solid and aggressive defense. As usual Luke F. played a very physical game and Geoff B. was skating hard everywhere. The Lions now face the undefeated Sea Hawks from Delaware Military Academy on Tuesday at the Pond. The Sea Hawks have a deep and solid roster that will give the Lions a real battle.

1/20/2012 JV ANC 0 @ Episcopal 7
ANC JV played another game on Fri 1/20 PM at Ice Line Rink in West Chester against Episcopal Academy, third game in three days. We were missing Kirk S, but were able to use Steve P from Varsity and had Colin R in goal for the first two periods. We did not get a shot on goal report, but have to assume it was lopsided in Episcopal’s favor. We trailed 3 -0 after the first period, and gave up 2 goals in each the final two periods for a 7 -0 Loss. However again strong play from the line of Clay C , Jessie F, Seth W led the way with many scoring chances. Dustin S came in to play the final period and looked good. We had many power play opportunities, but could not capitalize. The Defense was led by Rich S, Luke S, Scott W, Steve P, and Josh G. Cameron and Derek W are starting to come around and Brennan Mc, Sam N, and Ken McQ are playing strong hockey as well. JV has more games next week, starting with another road game on Mon 1/23.

1/19/2012 JV ANC 3 v. Caravel 5
The ANC JV played again on 1/19/12 Thurs PM at Home against Caravel Academy. After the strong game the night before, expectations were high. Even with Caravel having only 10 skaters, Caravel managed to come away with a 1 -0 lead after one period. In the second period ANC got a goal from Clay C, assisted by both Seth W and Jessie F. However we trailed 3 -1 after 2 periods of play, slowly getting back into the game. Unfortunately, penalties started to take their toll on the ANC JV Team. In the third period, ANC JV got goals from Brennan Mc assisted by Sam N and another goal from Ken Mc assisted by Sam N and Brennan Mc. Having closed the score to a 4 - 3 margin late in the third period, ANC gave up a late goal and lost 5 - 3. Things are slowly coming together, hopefully the boys have a little more left in the tank as we take on Episcopal Academy on Fri 1/20 away. Three games in three days is a lot for any team to take on, so a little support and best wishes would go a long way.

1/18/2012 JV ANC 2 v. Notre Dame HS 3
ANC JV played another game tonight vs Notre Dame JV for the second time on Wed 1/18/12. But guess what, this time we played a much better game. After a tight first period, we came out with a 1 to 1 tie. Colin Rogers in goal was outstanding and the line of Seth W, Clay C, and Jessie F continued to force play in the Notre Dame zone. Seth W scored the first goal on a great passing sequence from both Clay C and Jessie F. Notre Dame scored 2 goals in the second period and led 3 -1 after 2 periods. As we got into the third period, JV tightened up and the line of Seth W / Sam N / and Ken Mc got it going as Sam N scored a goal assisted by Seth W. After given up a large number of shots through the first 2 periods, we managed to finish with a 3 -2 Loss allowing them only 9 shots for the final period and not allowing them to score as Dustin Smith tended goal for us in the final period and was outstanding as well. The team is starting to play as a whole more consistently and look forward to games on Thurs 1/19 vs Caravel at Home and on Fri 1/20 away vs Episcopal. GO JV !!!

1/18/2012 Varsity ANC 6 v. Lawrenceville 0
ANC beat Lawrenceville 6 to 0 in a boys Independence Hockey League game on Wednesday afternoon at the Pavilion. It was the third shutout in a row for the Lions. Addison E. (2 periods and Travis M. (1period) combined for the shutout in net. The lions scored with all types of goals. The first goal in the first period was an even strength goal by Travis from Justin C. and Cade G. The second goal in the first period was a shorthanded goal unassisted by Travis. The third goal in the 1st period was also shorthanded and unassisted by Justin. Justin found the back of the net again in the 2 period on a power play goal from Shane M. With time winding down in the 2nd period Cade punched in an even strength top shelf goal from Travis. The 6th goal was scored in the 3rd period on a power play by Brett D. from Ben A. Jessie F, Seth W., and Clay Cronlund logged some ice time adding to the depth of the team. The defense unit of Mack E, David A, Ben A. and Colton D. had another solid performance. Next up is a league game vs. Hill School on Saturday at 2:00 at the Hill. Come enjoy the game and cheer on the boys. The team really appreciates all of the fan support!

1/13/2012 Varsity ANC 6 v. Alexis Dupont 0
Team defense was the name of the game as ANC took down the undefeated 2011 Delaware state champions A.I. duPont Tigers 6 to 0. The Tigers have not been shut out or lost a game in nearly two seasons. The defensive unit was led by Colton D., Mack E. and Geoff B. Ben A had one his best games of the season along with strong performances by David D. and Brandon H. Addison E. looked sharp in net earning the shut out. The scoring was led by Travis M. with 2 goals and 2 assists and Cade. G with 2 goals and 1 assist. Justin C. chipped in 2 goals and Shane M. and Geoff each helped out with 1 assist each. The energy line of Tyler H., Brett D. and Alex B. had an excellent game working the offensive zone and wearing down the Tigers. Luke F. and Alex. H added some very needed aggressive play. The Lions have a lot of work to do with 5 huge league games coming up.

1/12/2012 JV ANC 2 v. Notre Dame HS 1
ANC JV Ice Hockey Team played on Thurs 1/12/12 PM at Home against the Notre Dame JV Team. For one of the few times this season, our boys came out to start the game strongly. Even though we were outshot 19 - 4 with Colin Rogers having an outstanding effort in goal. We managed to limit Notre Dame from getting too many really good scoring chances. The boys got stronger as the game wore on and ANC JV started getting good scoring opportunities from the line of Clay C, Jessie F, and Seth W. Notre Dame scored two goals in the second period, so we trailed 2-0 after 2 periods of play. Then the ANC JV picked it up in the final period and got a goal from Brennan McCurdy assisted by Cameron Weiss. We outshot them 9 to 7 in the final period and finished with a 2 -1 Loss to a good team who had outstanding goaltending to match the effort of our Colin R. Strong performances were noted from Luke and Kirk Synnestvedt, Sam Neiger, and Rich Smith. The whole team is starting to put together better execution and more consistent effort in games. Joe Sprinkle and Bae Kim got a chance to contribute as well. We have 3 games next week, so stay tuned and cheer us on.

1/11/12 Varsity ANC 5 v. Hill 0
The ANC Varsity Ice Hockey team took on Hill School at the Pavilion on Wednesday afternoon. The Lions beat Hill 5-0 earning 2 points in Independence Hockey League. The Lions out played Hill right from the opening faceoff. The boys controlled the play while working their magic in the offensive zone. Hill did not help their cause by going to the box with 4 penalties in the 1st period. That was all that the Lions needed as they scored on all 4 power plays. Cade G. lead all scorers with a play maker plus one (4 assists). Shane M. earned 3 points by means of 1 goal and 2 assists. Justin C had a hat trick (3 goals) and Travis M had 1 goal. The entire defensive core continues to get the job done with another solid game. Addison E. earned the shutout in net just back from a groin injury. The team continues to work hard with discipline and focus while having fun. Last weekend the Lions beat undefeated Kiski 8-2 and Linsly 8-0. This Friday the Lions will have a huge game vs. the Tigers from A.I. DuPont at 3:45 at the Pavilion. The Tigers are undefeated this season and were the Delaware state champs in 10-11. Last year the Lions tied the Tigers 6 to 6. It should be a great game! Come cheer on the team.

1/9/2012 JV ANC 7 DelCo Christian 0
On Mon 1 / 9 / 12 the ANC JV Ice Hockey Team played it’s first game of the new year against the Delco Knights at the Aston Ice Works Rink in Delaware County. As in the past, the JV Team got off to a slow start and trailed early in the game. The Delco Team scored 5 goals by the middle of the first period, controlling most of the play. The final score was 7 - 0. However the JV Team gained composure and started to show signs of getting the game under control by the third period. Clay Cronlund had a breakaway late in the game, almost scoring. Seth Wyncoll and Jessie Frazier played well. Sam Neiger, Cody Smith, and Jared Simons all improved as the game wore on. In goal, Dustin Smith started to make quality saves later in the game after struggling early in the game. Justin Ball and Dae Hwong got an opportunity to play as well. The Defense led by Scott Weiss and Rich Smith, played well with Kirk Synnestvedt helping out. We look forward to a home game on Thurs 1/ 12 PM against Notre Dame, see you there.

1/7/2012 Varsity ANC 8 @ Linsly 0

1/6/2012 Varsity ANC 8 @ Kiski 3

1/4/2012 Varsity ANC 6 @ Father Judge 6
The ANC Lions met there match when they faced off against Father Judge on Wednesday evening at the Flyers Skate Zone in front of a large crowd. The scored ended in a 6-6 tie after a back and forth seesaw of a game. Father Judge was extremely fast and very solid on the puck forcing ANC to work very hard in both the offensive and defensive zones. The offensive line of Luke F., Shane M. and Alex H. put together a very solid game. Alex had a play maker (3 assists) and 1 goal. Shane had two goals and Luke had 1. Travis M. scored the first goal of the game from Cade G. and Cade scored the final tying goal with 3 minutes left in the game. It was a nice back door goal from Travis and Justin C. Father Judge outshot ANC 28 to 21.

12/17/2011 JV ANC 4 v. Bryn Athyn Youth Hockey 0
Hello ALL and HAPPY HOLIDAYS, the ANC JV Ice Hockey Team played the BAYH Bantams tonight at the Pavilion in an annual epic battle of Family vs Family (yes I realize some of the kids are not BA youth). Well with some of our regulars away on holiday, the fun began. After a close battle throughout the first period, the JV Team was ahead 1 - 0 on a Jessie Frazier goal assisted by Clay Cronlund and Seth Wyncoll. Both teams went back and forth with the BAYH Bantams getting many good scoring opportunities. Fortunately for us, Colin Rogers was standing tall in goal for the JV. Literally and figuratively, he stood the charge and kept things close for us the rest of the way stopping all 16 shots he faced from beginning to end. In the second period, the JV got a great unassisted goal from Sam Neiger who stole the puck down low from the Bantams defense and got off a quick shot that found a way to the back of the net. Later in the third period, Brennen McCurdy scored on a great series of plays assisted by Ken McQueen who played strongly throughout the game. Shortly thereafter, Clay Cronlund got a goal by carrying the puck into the Bantam Zone and beating three players to score from the slot. Final score 4 -0 for the JV. Strong performances were turned in by Scott Weiss, Rich Smith, Luke Synnestvedt, and Josh Gunther on defense. The Weiss twins - Cameron + Derek are getting better with each game and we got Mr. Bae Kim in for a couple shifts and hopefully he had a great time. We hope the boys have a safe and happy holiday, come out and play Christmas Hockey during the week, and get plenty of nice Hockey Equipment from the Big Guy from up North. See you all in the new year and by the way, there is a McCurdy Video Production Game tape coming - check it out.
