Educational Support Services
The objective of Educational Support Services (ESS) is to assist students who are struggling academically. While ANC is not a remedial school, ESS will support struggling students and help them reach their potential. Some students may need diagnostic testing in order to provide recommendations to the classroom teachers, and while we are committed to mainstreaming students in as many subjects as possible, we may institute specific support/study skills classes and study periods to supplement the recommendations.
Strategies
We utilize inclusion strategies and curriculum modifications for mainstreamed students. At the beginning of the academic year and throughout the year as needed, curriculum modifications are put updated and conveyed via individual meetings with classroom teachers. At the end of each academic year the modifications for returning students are evaluated by the department head and sent home to the parents for them to consent their use in the upcoming school year.
Modified courses can earn partial or full credit, according to a curriculum worked specified by the regular teacher and ESS, and approved by the appropriate department.
Services
ESS provides five services for students:
- We help students who are struggling to connect with tutors who we hope will meet their needs.
- There is a study lab for math and science two nights a week in the Student Center.
- The Writing Center, staffed by college English majors, is offered two nights a week and by appointment.
- An ESS teacher is available after school in the Student Center for help as needed and by appointment.
- Finally, oral testing and extended time on tests is also available for qualified students through the Student Center.
In general, ANC is a place where a variety of students can be successful. We encourage parents/guardians to speak with the principals and ESS department head about a child's unique situation. We review each applicant on an individual basis. Although we are a small school with limited faculty and resources, we want to provide a New Church Education for as many students as possible.
