The ideas introduced here serve as a strong foundation for considering problems of scientific philosophy.

Great Expectations and the Life of Charles Dickens

Led by Janna King (MA in Literature from Bread Loaf)
Tuesdays, October 19, 26, November 2, 9, 16
Time: 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm
Cost: $75 ($65 if registered by August 27; $85 if registering after October 8)
Location: Bryn Athyn College, Doering Center, room TBD

To read Great Expectations is to take a life changing journey into the human heart, particularly the heart of a child. You will know yourself, and therefore other people, better when you have finished. Dickens' own life wandered through every social strata of Victorian England, and his personal fortunes took him from the gates of abject poverty and debtor's prison, all the way into the courts of royalty. The voice of Pip, the sensitive and lonely orphan boy who narrates the story, will draw you into his adventures from the first page of the tale to the final paragraphs. This is a very fun read!

Janna King loves to study literature with other adult minds. She brings a wide range of teaching experience with her into the Lifelong Learning classes, and draws on insights gained from pursuing her own writing and publication career. Once registered, students can choose any edition of this book to bring to the first class. No pre-reading is required, but the book is lengthy and you may wish a head start in order to cut down on later assignments.

We are used to thinking about numbers as quantities. Three chairs, four apples, ten dollars, how many people will take this class? The Most Ancients, however, were more interested in qualitative number, as in the underlying nature of Oneness, Twoness, Threeness, etc. Their most profound ideas were expressed in numbers rather than words. This class will explore the relationship between number, geometry and the spiritual world. It will be based on the creation story and will be comprised of both lecture and drawing time.

For class please bring a compass, pencil, straight edge and 11" x 14" spiral bound sketch book.

Steve Hendricks is the owner of Historic Doors (www.historicdoors.com), designers and fabricators of custom entryways. Steve has enjoyed taking classes on the subject of sacred geometry and proportion and is excited to share what he has learned.
