Educational Support | Services

ANC is a place where a variety of students can be successful. We encourage parents/guardians to speak with the principals and Educational Support Services director about a child's unique situation. Each student is reviewed on an individual basis. Although we are a small school with limited resources, we want to provide a New Church Education for as many students as possible.

Study Services:

  • 6th/7th period Study Lab: located in the Student Center, Benade Hall 3rd floor, Monday-Thursday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00p.m. Students can come to the Student Center quiet work-study labs and work independently or with a teacher on homework goals or long term projects.

  • 6th Period Focus Study Groups in  Math/ Science and General Studies: These happen four days a week. A teacher specializing in these subjects helps students studying for tests, writing papers, working on homework and reviewing course materials. This program may be attended by any student on a drop-in basis.

    • General Studies meets Monday through Thursday, 2:00 to 3:00 in Benade Hall, Student Center.
    • Math and Science meets Tuesday and Wednesday, 2:00 to 3:00 pm in Room 302, Student Center, and Monday and Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 8:00 pm in Benade Hall, room 218.

  • Homework Coaching: 2-4 afternoons (2-3 PM) or evenings (7-9 PM) per week, Monday through Thursday, depending on the student's after-school commitments. Frequency and times to be determined by the student's advisor and the Director of Educational Support Services. It is assigned to students at the recommendation of their advisor and with the approval of the Educational Support department director. Afternoon sessions meet in assigned classrooms in the Fine Arts Building and deCharms Hall, evening sessions in deCharms Hall only.

  • Tutoring program: Private tutors can be arranged for students who need academic support in specific subjects. The school facilitates the process, but parents are responsible for payment and oversight.
    • Peer tutors: Students work with other students to help them achieve academic goals. $10.00 per hour.
    • College age and above: Tutors who have graduated from high school and are shown to be capable in a specific subject. $20.00 and up per hour. Contact the student's academic advisor and Brenda Rydstrom, Director of Learning Media and Educational Support to make arrangements for a tutor. Locations for private tutoring are arranged by tutor, student and parents.
  • Educational Study Period: This is a period during the school day designed to assist students who demonstrate a history of learning challenges or disabilities, or are in academic peril due to unforeseen life circumstances. Students in Study Periods work in small groups and one-on-one with a support teacher to learn effective study skills through reviewing course material, completing long term and short term assignments, and studying for tests.

During Freshman and Sophomore years the Study Period will be taken in place of World Language courses. Junior and Senior students with Study/Support periods may enroll in both World Language and Support periods as their elective choices.

Students must be recommended for this class by Ms. Rydstrom, Director of Learning Media and Educational Support, following a conference with parents and the student's academic advisor. Enrollment in a Study Period is accomplished following this conference. Study Periods are held in the Student Center Study Labs on the 3rd floor of Benade Hall. Study/Support Periods are not a credit bearing course.  Students taking Study/Support  periods will also be on weekly report so that parents are receiving continual updates on their progress.
