Academy of the New Church Secondary Schools

Quote of the Month

"Love consists in desiring to give what is one's own to another. To feel the joy of another as joy in oneself -- that is loving."

Community and Service Learning

"Inasmuch as you have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, you have done it to me."

                                                                                                                                      (Matthew 25:40)

The Academy provides many opportunities for its students to become involved in the life of the surrounding communities. In addition to Delta Mu, our community service club, our students enjoy the benefits of the following organizations, as well as other organizations in neighboring communities.

dmDelta Mu is the community service club of the Secondary Schools. The name is derived from the first letters of the Greek words for "serve" and "learn".

The motto of Delta Mu is LEARN TO SERVE, SERVE TO LEARN. The colors of Delta Mu are all colors, representing the variety of talents and qualities each individual has to offer as well as the infinite number of uses to be served.

The club is led by two presidents, one from the Girls School and one from the Boys School.

There are many other opportunities to serve in the community, including...

  • Bryn Athyn Church and its many activities.

  • Boys Scouts Troop 97 is a local member of Boys Scouts of America, serving local boys, but also supporting boys from away who are striving to attain the rank of Eagle Scout.

  • The Pennypack Ecological Restoration Trust, founded in 1970, is a nonprofit land trust headquartered in Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania. The Trust is staffed by professionals and volunteers dedicated to the stewardship of the lands that are protected by the Trust in its Pennypack Preserve natural area. Students can be involved on different levels, including Science class service project activity in the watershed, or more direct individual involvement, such as bird watching or program attendance.

  • Bryn Athyn Community Theater is a non-profit amateur theater group whose membership is open to residents of Bryn Athyn and other near-by communities, including students of the Academy of the New Church. It has been serving the Philadelphia region with high quality theatrical entertainment since 1981. Staffed entirely by volunteers, "BAct" produces two major productions a year, currently in November and May.

  • Glencairn Museum educates visitors about the history of religion, using art and artifacts from a variety of cultures and time periods. Religious life through the ages is presented by means of a remarkable collection that illustrates religions as varied as ancient Egyptian, ancient Greek and Roman, medieval Christian, Islamic, Asian, and Native American. Students from the Secondary Schools often serve as liaisons or interns at the Glencairn Museum.

  • Bryn Athyn Fire Company provides emergency medical services and protects 14,000 people in Bryn Athyn and the adjacent township of Lower Moreland. Student members from the Academy Boys' and Girls' School and Bryn Athyn College work with community women and men of all ages as firefighters or ambulance providers.

  • Bryn Athyn Orchestra rehearses weekly on the high school campus and gives three concerts each year in the Academy's Mitchell Center for the Performing Arts.
