10/3/08 - ANC 0 (2-5-1, 1-2) at Westtown 1
The ANC Field Hockey team traveled to Westtown on October 3rd. It was a very evenly matched game which ended in a tie. The new FSL hockey guidelines state that one 15 minute overtime period is played – “sudden victory.” Unfortunately for us, 5 minutes into the period it was sudden loss as Westtown scored. The ANC team is very well matched with Westtown and played hard even though the team is small!
10/1/08 - Hill School 1 at ANC 8 (2-4-1, 1-1)
ANC played extremely skilled Hill School hockey team on the 1st of the month. We worked hard to keep up with their superior stick skills but lost 8-1. The highlight of the game for ANC was Karenna’s goal at the end of the first half.
9/26/08 - Shipley 2 at ANC 0 (2-3-1, 1-1)
ANC suffered their first league loss Friday, September 26th against The Shipley School. Although for much of the game the ANC girls held their own against last year’s FSL runner up, Shipley scored a quick goal at the beginning of the game. We rallied back during the rest of the game but were unable to score. Shipley scored again with two minutes to go to win 2-0.
9/23/08 - ANC 1 (2-2-1, 1-0) at Germantown Friends 0
ANC Field Hockey came away victorious in their first FSL match Tuesday at GFS. ANC had possession of the ball for much of the game, executing precise passes and controlling the midfield led by co-captains Allison D and Gretchen P. While the offense had many chances to score in the first half, it ended 0-0. ANC looked even better in the second half, even without subs, but still could not get the ball in the goal. Finally, with 4:59 to go in the game, senior Erika Z got the ball at the 25, dribbled it into the circle, shot and scored! This was her first goal wearing an ANC jersey! While GFS had an exciting rally with 3 more shots on goal, goalie Erika H, senior Jess P and the rest of the defense kept the ball out to win the game and earn their third consecutive shut-out. Next up: Shipley, who knocked ANC out of the playoffs in 2007, home on Friday.
9/16/08 - Jenkintown 0 at ANC 1 (1-2-1)
ANC field hockey posted their first win on Tuesday at a home game against Jenkintown HS. Despite having only one sub, they played hard the entire game, controlling the ball for much of it. Blair C. scored the Lion’s one goal in the first half during a scramble in front of the goal, her first Varsity goal! The defense earned their second shut out of the season. Defense players Jess P, Kate D, Katie O and Gretchen P played strong through 4 defensive corners and goalie Erika H had 13 saves. The midfield also had an outstanding game, moving the ball efficiently up the field.
The team is now focused on the first league game next Tuesday at GFS.
9/12/08 - Baldwin School 0 at ANC 0 (0-2-1)
ANC Varsity field hockey played against Baldwin on Friday despite the rain. Baldwin dominated the first half but our defense was able to keep the ball out; the second half was more evenly matched and we had the ball at their end quite a bit but were unable to score. The game ended 0-0 which led to a 10 minute 7v7 overtime in which we dominated but were still unable to get the ball in the goal, ending the game in a tie. Our defense had an outstanding day, not allowing a score with 8 defensive corners. Goalie Erika Heilman had 15 saves, one of which was a 1v1 situation. The girls played the 70 minutes very hard, even improving as the game went on despite the difficult weather and the fact that we only had one sub. Erika Zecher was that single sub who played very well when she went in, especially considering that she is very new to hockey! The coaches were very happy with the intensity with which the girls played and are looking forward to posting a win soon.
9/5/08 - ANC 0 (0-2) at Stuart Country Day 7
Varsity Field Hockey ran into a very tough opponent on a new field. They played at Stuart Country Day and played their first game on turf this year. Stuart Country Day won 7-0. With two teams in the league that have turf fields it is likely that this experience will come back to help the lions.
9/3/08 - Lower Moreland 3 at ANC 2 (0-1)
Varsity Field Hockey began their season on Wednesday against backyard rival Lower Moreland. Lower Moreland walked up the hill to play ANC in its season opener on a hot, humid day. This was also the first game on the realigned field. The fans were treated to a back and forth battle. Allison Duggan scored the first goal of the year and gave ANC an early 1-0 lead. She scored on a penalty corner. The game went to half time tied 1-1. Lower Moreland took an early lead in the second half. It didn't last long as Brandy Asplundh scored on an assist from Karenna Genzlinger. Senior Erica Heilman played her first game ever in goal after only 4 days of practice. She was outstanding with 11 saves. It wasn't quite enough as Lower Moreland took a 3-2 lead midway through the second half. With only 3 returning starters and 4 practices ANC feels pretty good about their game today and their season to come.
