“No man is an island, entire of itself, every one is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.” John Donne’s immortal words exemplify our tennis teaching philosophy at the Academy. In a world where tennis is often seen as solely an individual’s sport, the Academy’s coaches present things differently – team member first, individual athlete second. We are all a part of something bigger, a “grand plan” and it is from this inspired principle that we address and coach each girl.
On any given fall afternoon, you quite possibly may hear Head Coach Miki DeBaise reminding the girls that “tennis teaches perseverance and accountability – no excuses!” or that “performance, effort, and attitude make us stronger, not the results.” These are core values to Coach DeBaise and she has been iterating words along these same lines for 35 coaching years.
Last season (DeBaise’s eleventh year at ANC) the Varsity had a winning record of 7-5, and two other league losses were very tight (3-2). It was also the first time in many years that a singles player reached the semi-finals in the Individual All League Tournament. This upcoming season will be one of rebuilding since we have said good-bye to six Varsity seniors. To this end both the Varsity and JV will be preparing for the future. As coaches, we feel inordinately blessed to get to work with such fine young ladies.
