Academy of the New Church Secondary Schools

Student Support

The Academy Secondary Schools provide a variety of resources to students experiencing academic difficulty. Teacher assistance is provided individually and in small group support sessions. A network of tutors is available through Educational Support Services (ESS) as well as study materials and books on tape. Supervised study periods are available after school in the Student Center. These periods are reserved for students who are experiencing academic difficulty and need structured time to study, but who have not been assigned to regular Study Hall.

Help with homework, study skills and special attention to Math and Science is available at the Student Support Center in the evening: Study Club

Small classes and individual attention are
hallmarks of an Academy education.

Study Hall is a program designed for students who do not finish required work or who have difficulty sustaining a passing average. Study labs are held in the evenings to assist students in math and science. Tutors are on hand during this time to provide instruction.

More specific support is available on a case-by-case basis for students with demonstrated learning disabilities. Requisite for this support is a thorough evaluation of the student's needs and potential. Students coming from specialized programs should be sure to have all pertinent records transferred. Students suspected of needing specialized support may have those needs evaluated through educational testing provided by the ESS staff with the possibility of further psycho-educational assessment. Specified support in these cases sometimes requires the involvement of specialists not on staff. Admission and arrangements for these special programs are a result of conferences between the Principal, parents, and ESS staff.

In addition, ESS offers courses for credit for students with special needs. A Life Skills course covers areas such as banking, filling out forms, map and schedule reading, and other basic skills needed for independent living. A Study Skills course in conjunction with specific academic support may be offered as needs arise. The course may be repeated at the discretion of the department head. Admission to these courses is contingent on approval of the Principal and the ESS staff.

The Academy also works with the Eastern Montgomery County Vocational Technical School to provide students with a more comprehensive education in their chosen technical field. This course of study is limited to students in junior and senior years. Eastern Vo-Tech is also limited to students who are residents of Montgomery county.  Dorm students may not participate in this program.
