Physical Education

Physical Education is required of all students every quarter. Two periods a week, 1.5 points credit a quarter. Medically excused students are placed in an individualized program where possible. Weight A.

Girls Physical Education

Grade 9 (Physical Education and Health) The freshman year offers a variety of team sports, dance, and individual activities emphasizing the development of individual skills and team concepts. Students will have the opportunity to participate in field hockey, soccer, jazz, European handball, flag football and tennis. Daily classes are structured to introduce students to physical fitness concepts and applications. Health focuses on stress management. Positive coping devices are emphasized. Students learn about the negative effects of using drugs and alcohol as coping devices so they will not resort to these techniques Topics include stress and the body’s systems, personality, healthy nutrition, relaxation techniques, coping devices.

Grade 10 (Physical Education) The sophomores continue to study team sports with volleyball and basketball. Students take a second step in their fitness development by designing and participating in their own fitness class. In this course they structure and monitor a personal aerobic and weight training program. Sophomores also are introduced to Ultimate and badminton.

Grade 11 (Physical Education and Health) In the junior year individual activities are emphasized. Leadership, fellowship, trust, risk-taking, and problem-solving activities make up the "challenge" unit. Ice skating and golf are also introduced as lifetime activities. Health focuses on human sexuality and relationships. The emphasis is on making spiritually guided, informed decisions.

Grade 12 (Physical Education and Health) The goal of the senior year program is to reinforce our strong belief in the fitness-for-life philosophy. Students are encouraged to develop their interests and skills in activities that they can use and enjoy throughout their life. Tennis, yoga and various types of aerobic exercise are emphasized. A self-defense course focuses on prevention and physical techniques. There is a $30.00 lab fee for this course. Students are required to take a CPR course which includes the prevention of heart disease and strokes, healthy life-styles, and a unit on tobacco and its negative effects on the body. CPR certification is possible.

Boys Physical Education

IX Physical Education and Health: The course focuses on the student’s current need to better his physical growth and development, and to assist this positive development through positive effort. Students will be introduced to the circuit program and given instruction on the positive aspects of a sound fitness center program for lifetime use. Students will be given an introduction to tumbling and golf. Health will focus on nutrition, personal health, tobacco, drugs and alcohol.

X Physical Education and Health: The course focuses on strength and fitness training as well as the acquisition of physical skills through participation in a variety of activities with both general and specific movement patterns. This will occur through continued circuit and fitness center training, advanced tumbling, and rock climbing. The Health course will include description and discussion in the following areas: self-awareness and a positive self image, the positive elements of decision making techniques, physiological descriptions of the male and female reproductive anatomy, dating, marriage love, contraception, and sexually transmitted diseases,

XI Physical Education and Health: The course is based on the bio-mechanical principles involved in human physical activity. The students must learn these principles and through discussion and demonstration apply them to the program. This will occur through a partially individualized circuit and fitness center training program, badminton, and tennis. In Health, the students will study the natural and spiritual influences which affect the human mind. The student is encouraged to recognize, understand, and be able to cope in a positive manner with the stress that results from these influences. Students will be introduced to those agencies that can provide responsible guidance and resource material.

XII Physical Education: The course focuses on cardiovascular fitness, hand-eye coordination, and team skills. Students will develop an independent circuit program and an individual fitness center lifting program that they have tailored to their own needs, an important skill in maintaining an acceptable level of fitness in their lifetime. Units in one wall handball and team handball will help the students to develop eye-hand coordination and team building skills.
