Dining Hall

The Academy campus, looking west. Students visit the Glencairn Museum, left, for Art, History and Religion classes, and Cairnwood Mansion, right, for History. Both facilities are used for formal social events.

Although conveniently located near Philadelphia, the Academy campus is nestled in the borough of Bryn Athyn, with its quiet neighborhoods, woodlands and fields.

The New Dining Hall preserves the restored original, with added space for comfortable dining, as well as additional instructional and social capabilities.

Two new wings extend toward the boys and girls dormitories. With walls of glass showing a panorama of the campus, and vaulted beam ceiling, the spaces have the look and feel more of a ski lodge than a cafeteria.

Multiple serving stations, such as this pizza station, offer variety as well as spreading out the crowd. An improved menu includes a grilling station, where food is prepared right in front of the students.

On the other side of the serving area, an extensive salad bar offers a variety of alternatives. The over all design has done away with the long lines and traffic jams of the past.

The former apartment space upstairs has been converted to a comfortable faculty dining area for convenient lunch meetings, with an atrium view to the serving hall. The rooms can also be used for instructional programs.

Fireplaces provide a cozy spot for a chilly evening, and an extensive terrace opens up to back campus in warm weather. This profile shot to the east shows the successful preservation of the original dining hall, built in 1905.
