“I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit”
(John 15:16)
Personal Appearance
The Boys School sees educational value in maintaining a dress code for its students. It influences the sphere of the institution, helping to maintain an environment in which learning can take place and providing the students with an opportunity to practice self-discipline. We ask students to comply with the spirit of the following guidelines.
Heads, Facial Hair, Piercing and Body Jewelry
General
Students should dress in a conservative manner. Clothing should be modest and clean; without wrinkles, tears, fraying, stains, and patches; and it must fit. While attending class, students should wear dress pants, dress shirts or golf/polo shirts, socks, and leather shoes. All clothing should be solid colors—no stripes, checks, window panes, tattersalls, or herringbones. See below for specific colors and details.
All boys are required to have a pair of black dress pants, a white long-sleeved dress shirt, a pair of black socks, and a pair of leather shoes. We will provide the boys with one red sweater as a gift for attending the school. The Boys will wear this combination for the Charter Day procession and other special events.
What is acceptable in terms of pants:
Acceptable dress pants have two front pockets and one or two back pockets, no more than that. We accept what are referred to as twills, chinos, wool pants, and widewale and finewale corduroys. They should have a zippered fly. The pants can be cotton, polyester, wool, or a blend of fabrics. They may have either a pleated or plain front, and they can be cuffed or have a regular hem. The acceptable colors are black; grays (also referred to as dark or light charcoal); dark blues (also called navy); browns (referred to as chocolate brown, spice brown, or light brown); khaki (also referred to as tan and camel); muted greens (also referred to as olive, sage, and bayleaf); and whites.
What is unacceptable in terms of pants:
No jeans or denim of any color or kind. No cargo pants, military fatigues, overalls, sweatpants or other athletic wear. Nothing with a drawstring tie. No zippers other than the fly. As for colors of the dress pants, please, no reds, pinks, purples, oranges, yellows, light blues, or bright greens.
Belts must be worn with pants made with belt loops.
What is acceptable in terms of shirts:
Dress shirts and polo or golf shirts are acceptable. There are different types of dress shirts. Oxfords, twills, pinpoints, and broadcloths are all acceptable as long as they are a single, solid color. The shirts can be all cotton or a cotton/polyester blend. They may be short-sleeved or long-sleeved with buttondown or straight collars. The acceptable colors are white, ivory, gray, light blue, French blue, yellow, lavender, light pink or dark pink.
The polo shirts can be short-sleeved or long-sleeved with a hemmed or banded sleeve. They can have a single pocket or no pocket at all. They can be all cotton or a cotton/polyester blend. The acceptable colors are white, ivory, navy, burgundy, olive/loden, yellow, pink, lavender.
Dress shirts must be tucked in.
What is unacceptable in terms of shirts:
No logos of any kind. No turtlenecks, mock turtlenecks, t-shirts, flannels, henleys, athletic apparel, denim, or chambrays. No patterns; everything must be a solid color. No tipped collars or sleeves. Colors: no black; no glow in the dark colors and shades. No underwear should be visible with the exception of possibly a little bit of an undershirt at the front of the neck.
What is acceptable in terms of shoes:
Soft or polished leather oxfords, penny loafers, or docksiders are acceptable. This includes suede tops and dark soles. Shoes can be either brown or black.
What is unacceptable in terms of shoes:
No boots of any kind. Nothing that resembles a sneaker. No flip-flops or any kind of beach shoe. No slippers, moccasins, hiking shoes, or heelless clogs. No sandals (except in August/September and May/June. More details will follow.) No multicolored shoes. No Velcro except for students with specific disabilities.
Shoes with laces must be tied.
On bad weather days, students may wear boots to school but must change to acceptable shoes at homeroom time.
What is acceptable in terms of socks:
All socks must be full length and a solid color. Dress, cotton or wool ragg, and fleece socks are all acceptable. Cotton, wool, nylon, and blends are fine. The acceptable colors are the same as the colors for pants: black; grays (also referred to as dark or light charcoal); dark blues (also called navy); browns (referred to as chocolate brown, spice brown, or light brown); khaki (also referred to as tan and camel); muted greens (also referred to as olive, sage, and bayleaf); and whites.
What is unacceptable in terms of socks:
No socks with any patterns. No booties, quarter, or half-length socks. Students must wear socks (except with sandals).
Warm weather wear
What is acceptable in terms of shorts:
In August and September and later in May and June, the buildings can be quite warm. In those months we allow students to wear shorts. Nice khaki/tan shorts are acceptable. Other permissible colors include ivory, white, olive/loden, navy/dark blue, and black. They must have a zippered fly. Cargo pockets are acceptable.
What is unacceptable in terms of shorts?
No “short” shorts, athletic wear, cut-offs, or beach wear. No denim of any color. No zippers other than the fly.
Footwear in warm weather:
Students may wear sandals in the warm months. The sandals must have a heel strap and be either black or brown. Black or brown “crocs” are acceptable. Students may also wear sneakers with socks.
Cold weather wear
While our buildings are heated, they are old and drafty. The rooms can get cold during the winter months. To stay warm, students can wear solid-colored V-neck, Crewneck, and Cardigan sweaters. We will provide one red sweater. V-neck and Crewneck vests are also fine. Other acceptable colors include white, ivory, black, light or dark gray, navy/dark blue, burgundy/wine, khaki/tan, and olive/loden. Sweaters can be cotton, wool, polyester, cashmere, or a blend.
Students may also wear ANC school, club, and team sweatshirts or fleeces, but they may not wear the sweatshirts with the hoods up.
What is unacceptable cold weather wear?
No Sweatshirts that are unrelated to ANC. No coats or jackets of any kind. No turtlenecks. No patterns or logos. No zippers. No shirts or undershirts should be hanging out below sweaters, fleeces, and sweatshirts.
Acceptable shirts must be worn underneath acceptable cold weather wear.
Heads and Facial Hair
No hats or hoods may be worn in school.
Faces must be clean-shaven unless the student enters the first day of school with a fully-grown and carefully manicured beard or mustache. Beards should be closely cropped to the face, not bushy in the style of the Civil War era. The Assistant Principal will judge the acceptability of the beard or mustache.
Hair should be off the shoulders when standing or sitting. It should be clean, groomed, out of the face, and its natural color.
We do not allow pony tails, spikes, buns, braids or bizarre fashions. Headbands, bobby pins, and other fasteners are unacceptable. We will ask students with multi-colored, bleached, or dyed hair to cut their hair very short and let it grow out in its natural color.
No piercing for body jewelry with one exception. Students may wear one simple stud or small loop in each earlobe.
Notes:
Dress code standards are in effect when in the classroom buildings. Students should be properly attired before entering classroom buildings and at all times until the end of the school day.
If a student violates the dress code by dressing down, he may be expected to dress up and/or forfeit dress code privileges as a consequence. Students who continually violate the dress code may be suspended or expelled.
Students should dress in an exemplary and appropriate manner when representing the Academy on a team, a trip, or for special events, etc. The Principal, coaches, teachers, and advisors will set the standard.
The Principal and Assistant Principal reserve the right to adjust specific items of the dress code and the special standards as necessary and warranted to maintain order and a sphere conducive to education and the principles of the Academy.
